Tehran, 30 May (H.S.): Iranian authorities are reportedly making extensive preparations for a state funeral for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country navigates a fragile post-conflict political and security environment following its recent war with the United States and Israel.
According to Iranian state media reports, a special coordinating headquarters has been established to oversee arrangements for what is being described as a “grand ceremony” with large public participation expected once an official date is announced. Various state institutions and agencies are currently involved in planning logistics for the event.
Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades, was killed during the initial phase of the conflict on February 28, when US-Israeli strikes escalated into a wider military confrontation. The war significantly disrupted Iran’s internal governance and delayed formal state proceedings, including earlier plans for a national funeral.
State-linked reports indicate that while an initial memorial event was held in April, full state funeral arrangements were postponed due to ongoing security concerns and instability triggered by the conflict. A ceasefire that came into effect later has largely held, although broader diplomatic efforts to formally end hostilities have yet to produce a lasting agreement.
Officials cited in Iranian media say multiple government bodies are now working to ensure “appropriate conditions” for a large-scale ceremony, with expectations of widespread attendance from political, religious, and military establishments.
The transition period has also seen attention shift toward leadership succession and internal restructuring. Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was reportedly injured in the same wave of strikes, has not made public appearances since the escalation and is widely seen as a key figure in succession discussions, although no formal announcement has been made.
Analysts view the planned funeral as a significant political and symbolic moment for Iran, potentially serving both as a national mourning event and a demonstration of regime continuity after a period of unprecedented military pressure and regional instability.
Further details regarding the timing and format of the ceremony are expected to be released by Iranian authorities in the coming days.
