New Delhi, May 28 (H.S.): The Indian Railways’ Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit is nearing completion and is expected to begin the production of intercity trains soon. Over the next five years, the facility is slated to manufacture 200 intercity trains.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on Thursday reviewed the progress of the Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit during a meeting with senior officials in New Delhi. Discussions were held regarding plans for the early operationalisation of the facility. Vaishnaw stated that these trains would be introduced across the country for short-distance travel. Designed to cover distances of around 300 kilometres with multiple stoppages, the trains will provide convenient transportation for students, working professionals and the general public.
These intercity trains will function in the manner of shuttle services, connecting nearby towns and cities. The initiative is expected to shift a significant volume of local passenger traffic from roads to railways.
The trains will be equipped with modern features, including automatic door-closing systems, improved ventilation, safer coach designs and a 20-coach configuration. Each coach will have two toilets. In addition, the trains will feature jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies. They are being designed to operate at speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour.
The trains will also incorporate regenerative braking systems, enabling them to generate electricity during braking and feed it back into the power grid. This will make them an energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable mode of transportation, significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to road transport.
