Chennai, 25 May (H.S.) :

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay on Monday directed police and government officials to ensure immediate registration of criminal cases, speedy investigations and strict punishment for those involved in serious offences, with a special focus on crimes against women and children.

The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting held at the State Secretariat to assess the handling of crimes against women and children, progress in criminal investigations, preventive measures and awareness initiatives aimed at improving public safety.

According to an official release, the Chief Minister chaired the meeting, which was attended by senior officials from the police department, Social Welfare Department and the office of the Advocate General.

During the review, Vijay stressed the need to expedite the handling of sexual offence cases and ensure that legal procedures are pursued effectively to secure stringent punishment for offenders. He observed that swift investigations and successful prosecution resulting in severe punishment would serve as a strong deterrent against future crimes.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to strengthen coordination among investigative agencies and concerned departments so that criminal cases, particularly those involving women and children, move through the legal process without unnecessary delays.

He also emphasised the importance of adopting preventive measures and expanding public awareness campaigns to reduce crime and strengthen confidence in the justice system. Discussions during the meeting focused on the current status of investigations, the pace of legal proceedings and the need to create greater public awareness about safety mechanisms and legal protections available for vulnerable sections of society.

Officials also reviewed measures to improve the handling of sensitive cases and explored ways to ensure quicker delivery of justice.

Chief Secretary Dr. M. Saikumar, DGP Dr. Sandeep Roy Rathod and other senior officials attended the meeting.
