Hooghly, 25 May (H.S.): In a major anti-encroachment drive, an allegedly illegal office of a Trinamool Congress councillor was demolished with a bulldozer in Konnagar on Monday in the presence of Uttarpara MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty.
The structure, located at L Pukur Bot Tala crossing in Konnagar, was allegedly built on government land and functioned as the office of the councillor of Ward No. 20 of the Konnagar Municipality. Authorities also alleged that construction materials were being illegally stored and business activities were being carried out beside the office by a local man identified as Bablu Pal alias Khokon.
The demolition drive was carried out after the MLA arrived at the spot along with the chairman of the Konnagar Municipality and municipal engineers. Officials first measured the land before initiating the bulldozer operation. The councillor’s office was subsequently razed completely.
The action comes just days after another bulldozer drive in the area, during which an underpass toll gate office near Konnagar railway station was demolished.
The consecutive demolition drives have triggered intense political discussion in the region, particularly over alleged illegal constructions and encroachments linked to local political leaders.
