Kolkata, 25 May (H.S.): The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Monday granted Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee an additional 10 days to respond to notices issued over 17 properties linked to him. Abhishek Banerjee is the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The KMC had recently served notices seeking clarification on various issues related to the properties. Civic officials had also pasted a notice on the wall of his residence on Harish Mukherjee Road in the Bhabanipur area of south Kolkata. The original deadline for submitting a reply was midnight on Monday.
According to sources, Banerjee’s counsel had written to the civic body on Sunday requesting more time to respond. Following the request, the KMC authorities decided to extend the deadline by 10 days.
The notices reportedly questioned whether proper permission had been obtained from the civic body for any additional construction carried out at the properties. The corporation stated that further action would be decided only after receiving the response.
Meanwhile, a team of plainclothes Kolkata Police personnel suddenly arrived at Banerjee’s residence, “Santiniketan”, on Harish Mukherjee Road on Monday afternoon. However, the police did not officially disclose the reason behind the visit.
Eyewitnesses said the officers remained inside the residence for some time before coming out carrying a monitor, which was then placed inside a white vehicle bearing a “Kolkata Police” sticker.
Shortly after the police team left, a car reportedly registered in the name of a company linked to members of the Banerjee family also exited the premises. Sources said the “Santiniketan” residence is registered under the same company with the municipality.
The sudden police presence at the residence has triggered considerable speculation in political and administrative circles.
