
Hooghly, 25 May (H.S.): Two teenage students drowned after a small boat capsized in a lake at Suryasen Nagar under Ward No. 14 of Dankuni Municipality in Hooghly district. Their bodies were recovered on Monday morning after an overnight search operation.
According to local sources, four students from the area had gone for a late-night boat ride in a small dinghy around 9 pm on Sunday. During the ride, the boat suddenly overturned in the middle of the lake. While two of the boys managed to swim back to safety, the other two went missing in the water.
Police from Dankuni police station rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. Local youths joined the rescue efforts and conducted searches in the lake throughout the night. Fishing nets were used to trace the missing students, and later a speedboat from the district disaster management team was brought in to intensify the operation.
After several hours of search, the bodies of the two missing students were recovered from the lake at around 8:30 am on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Anik Biswas (17), a student of Chanditala Goralgacha High School, and Anshu Barui (16), a student of Dankuni Shishu Tirtha High School.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the locality. Local residents gathered near the lake throughout the night as rescue operations continued.
