Thiruvananthapuram, 20 May (H.S.): The future of the ambitious K-Rail SilverLine project, one of the flagship initiatives of the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government, is expected to come under intense focus on Wednesday as the V.D. Satheesan-led government convenes its second Cabinet meeting. Political observers, officials and residents affected by the project are closely watching the meeting amid indications that the new government could take a decisive stand on the controversial semi high-speed rail proposal.

Sources suggest that the government is considering the possibility of withdrawing notifications linked to the K-Rail project, signalling a major policy shift from the previous administration’s approach. The Cabinet meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., and discussions are also expected to cover the state’s worsening financial situation and possible measures to address the fiscal challenges facing Kerala.

The Cabinet is also likely to examine the draft of the Governor’s policy address, which is expected to outline the government’s broader priorities and administrative direction for the coming months.

Among the most closely watched issues is the fate of the land acquisition process initiated for the K-Rail SilverLine project. Reports indicate that the government is actively considering revoking the 2020 order through which the project was officially notified, along with subsequent land acquisition notifications issued for its implementation.

The K-Rail project had triggered widespread political and public debate from the time it was announced by the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. The United Democratic Front (UDF), then in the Opposition, had consistently opposed the project, arguing that it would lead to large-scale displacement, environmental concerns and financial burden on the state.

The project also witnessed strong protests across various parts of Kerala, particularly over the installation of yellow survey markers placed on properties identified for land acquisition. UDF leaders and activists had actively participated in demonstrations and, in several instances, removed the markers in protest against the project.

Given the UDF’s longstanding opposition to SilverLine, today’s Cabinet meeting is expected to mark a significant moment in determining whether the ambitious rail project will move forward or be formally shelved by the new administration.
