Thiruvananthapuram, 20 May (H.S.): Kerala is likely to experience heavy rainfall over the next two days under the influence of twin trough systems, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings for isolated spells of intense rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
According to the weather department, wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph are also expected in several areas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable regions.
For Wednesday, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast in the districts of Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram. On Thursday, the rain activity is expected to intensify further, affecting Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts.
As part of precautionary measures, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for these districts. Heavy rainfall, as defined by the department, refers to precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
Meteorologists said the current weather pattern is being driven by two active trough systems. One trough extends from eastern Uttar Pradesh through central Maharashtra, Marathwada, interior Karnataka and Kerala, reaching up to Lakshadweep. The second trough stretches from the southeast Arabian Sea near southern Lakshadweep across Kerala, interior southern Karnataka and Rayalaseema, extending up to a cyclonic circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The interaction of these systems is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Kerala and adjoining regions over the coming days.
The weather department has also indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala around May 26, though there could be a variation of up to four days on either side of the expected date.
Authorities have advised people living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and closely monitor official weather updates.
