South 24 Paragnas, 02 May (H.S.): Fresh tension erupted in Falta of South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, with a section of villagers demanding re-poll and alleging intimidation for voting in favour of the BJP.
While re-polling is being held in 15 booths across Diamond Harbour and Magrahat West Assembly segments, Falta has not been included in the list, triggering protests in the area.
Villagers alleged that miscreants owing allegiance to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were threatening them for supporting the BJP during polling. The allegations also named TMC candidate Jahangir Khan and his close associate and local panchayat chief IsrafiI Sardar.
Protesters blocked National Highway-17, demanding immediate arrest of the accused and re-poll in Falta. Some also sought the arrest of Khan.
Taking note of the developments, the Election Commission of India has sought a report on the incidents.
Tension has been prevailing in the area since Friday, when BJP workers alleged attacks in the Hashimnagar area. According to them, they were prevented from casting votes and later assaulted for protesting.
The police, along with central forces, have been deployed to maintain law and order. Diamond Harbour police district observer Ajaypal Sharma visited the spot to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, allegations of EVM tampering had also surfaced earlier from several booths in Falta, prompting opposition parties to demand re-poll in 32 booths.
Sources said Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had directed special observer Subrata Gupta to review the situation, who has reportedly recommended re-poll in around 30 booths. However, no final decision has been announced yet.
The situation is currently under control, with security forces maintaining vigil in the area.
