New.Delhi, 02 May (H.S.): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya declared the Supreme Court's rejection of Trinamool Congress's (TMC) plea on Election Commission staffing for West Bengal vote counting as a resounding affirmation of electoral integrity, interpreting it as a stern warning against efforts to undermine public confidence in the process.

This stance follows the apex court's Saturday ruling that no further directives are required, upholding the EC's April 13 circular permitting a combination of central and state personnel for the May 4 tally of the 294-seat assembly polls conducted on April 23 and 29.

Malviya, in a pointed social media pronouncement, framed the decision as yet another legal setback for TMC, which had urgently sought to bar central employees from supervisory roles, alleging potential bias despite the Calcutta High Court's prior endorsement of EC discretion.

He emphasized that the refusal to intervene signals judicial intolerance for attempts to influence or cast doubt over the integrity of the counting process, positioning it as a safeguard ahead of results in a fiercely contested election.

The controversy centers on EC protocols ensuring multi-layered oversight, including micro-observers and party agents at each counting table, with postal ballots preceding EVM verification and VVPAT audits from select units to preclude discrepancies.

While the episode unfolds against West Bengal's polarized political landscape, it remains distinct from unrelated regional tragedies, such as the recent Jabalpur boat capsizing in Madhya Pradesh, which claimed nine lives due to separate safety oversights.

The ruling reinforces the judiciary's hands-off approach to administrative poll logistics, prioritizing EC autonomy two days before counting.
