Guwahati, 02 May (HS): Ahead of the counting of votes for the Assembly elections, Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has levelled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India over the security of strong rooms.

Speaking to reporters after attending a luncheon hosted by opposition parties, Gogoi claimed that BJP workers were being allowed access inside strong rooms at several locations across the state. He further alleged that such individuals were also present during the polling process, raising concerns over the integrity of the electoral system. Calling the situation a threat to democracy, he questioned the role of the Election Commission.

The Congress leader asserted that the BJP lacks the ability to win elections based on its governance record and is instead attempting to “save itself through theft.” He said opposition parties have been consistently flagging the issue.

Referring to developments in other states, Gogoi also expressed doubts over the neutrality of personnel deployed for strong room security. He additionally targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging misuse of the police machinery against opposition leaders while serious issues like drug abuse continue to persist in the state.

On exit polls, Gogoi dismissed them as “TRP-driven,” claiming that an atmosphere of fear has prevented many voters from expressing their true opinions. He further stated that political shifts have already begun within the BJP and its allies, with people increasingly turning towards Congress.

Reacting to the Supreme Court granting anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera, Gogoi termed it unfortunate that remarks linked to Assam’s Chief Minister were raised in the country’s apex court, saying it affects the state’s image.------------
