New Delhi, May 19 (H.S.): A Delhi court on Tuesday rejected the interim bail plea of Umar Khalid, an accused in the Delhi riots case. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai passed the order dismissing Khalid’s application for interim bail.

Umar Khalid had sought 15 days’ interim bail to attend the chehlum ceremony following the death of his uncle and to stay with his mother before and after her surgery scheduled for June 2.

The court observed that Khalid had previously been granted interim bail and had not violated any of the bail conditions during that period. However, the court clarified that this did not automatically entitle him to interim bail on every occasion.

The court further stated that attending the chehlum ceremony of his uncle was not essential in the present circumstances. It remarked that Khalid should have sought interim bail immediately after his uncle’s death, and that seeking bail several days later no longer served any meaningful purpose.

Regarding his mother’s surgery, the court noted that Khalid’s sisters were also available to take care of her and observed that the surgery was of a routine nature. In view of these factors, the court dismissed the interim bail plea.

Earlier, on December 11, 2025, the court had granted Umar Khalid interim bail to attend a family wedding.

Prior to that, on January 5, the Supreme Court had rejected Umar Khalid’s regular bail plea. Subsequently, on April 20, his review petition challenging the rejection of his bail plea was also dismissed.

Umar Khalid was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on September 13, 2020, and has remained in judicial custody since then.
