Kolkata, 18 May (H.S.) : A civic volunteer attached to the Kulti Traffic Guard was killed in a tragic road accident at the Duburdihi checkpost on National Highway 19 under the Kulti police station area along the West Bengal-Jharkhand border, police said on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Ramen Saha, aged around 40.

According to police and local sources, Ramen Saha was on traffic signal duty at the Duburdihi checkpost on Sunday night when a speeding pickup van coming from the Jharkhand side allegedly lost control and hit him with great force. The impact threw him onto the road, leaving him critically injured.

Police personnel and fellow civic volunteers present at the spot immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Following the accident, the driver of the pickup van fled the scene. Police have registered a case against the unidentified vehicle and launched a search operation to trace the driver involved in the incident.

The incident has triggered grief among local residents and police personnel in the area.
