
Hooghly, 17 May (H.S.): The police have arrested Rajdeep De, chief of Kamarpukur gram panchayat in Hooghly district, on charges of alleged extortion, officials said.
According to police sources, De had been hiding at his maternal uncle’s house in the Ichhapur area under Dhaniakhali police station area.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid and arrested him from the location.
The accused was produced before the Arambagh sub-divisional court on Sunday.
During the hearing, police sought custody of De for the purpose of investigation.
The court later remanded him to five days in police custody.
The arrest has triggered political reactions in the area, although no official statement has yet been issued by the ruling party.
The police said a detailed investigation into the case was underway.
