Malappuram,12 May (H.S.):Four students were killed and several others injured after a lightning strike hit a group of youngsters visiting a hilltop viewpoint near Mankada in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Tuesday evening.

The deceased were identified as Rahees (20), Wahas (18), Siyad (18), and Fahad (19), all natives of Vellila. The tragic incident occurred around 5.30 p.m. at Panthalloor Mala, a popular hill destination near Mankada in Manjeri.

According to local residents and police sources, a seven-member group had reached the hilltop to visit the scenic viewpoint when sudden heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed the area. During the downpour, lightning struck the group, throwing several of them to the ground.

In the immediate aftermath of the strike, one member of the group was reported missing, triggering panic among rescuers and local residents. A search operation was launched despite difficult weather conditions, and the missing youth was later found and rushed to hospital for treatment.

Rescue efforts were significantly delayed as the accident occurred at the top of the hill, making access difficult for emergency responders. Local residents and volunteers played a crucial role in carrying the injured down the hill before they were shifted to Manjeri Medical College Hospital.

Hospital authorities said two of the victims had died before reaching the medical college, while the others succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The remaining injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, and their condition is being monitored.

The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Manjeri Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations and will later be handed over to their relatives.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the dangers of visiting hilltops and open areas during severe weather conditions and thunderstorms.
