Heavy rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram,06April (HS):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Kerala on Tuesday, prompting the issuance of a yellow alert in four districts. The alert has been declared for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram as a precautionary measure.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Such conditions are expected at isolated locations, particularly in hilly and interior regions that are more susceptible to intense weather activity.

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in parts of the state. These conditions are likely to continue until Thursday, raising concerns over public safety in vulnerable areas, including regions prone to waterlogging and minor landslides.

In addition, strong winds with speeds reaching up to 50 kmph are expected in certain areas. Authorities have cautioned that gusty winds combined with heavy rain could lead to the uprooting of trees, minor structural damage, and possible power disruptions.

Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. People are urged to avoid open spaces during lightning activity and limit unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Fishermen and those engaged in outdoor work have also been warned to exercise caution.

District administrations and disaster management teams have been placed on standby to respond to any emergencies. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins.
