Malappuram, 30 April (H.S.):The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has extended its support to Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan as the chief ministerial face, with state president Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal asserting that exit poll trends reflect a clear public preference in his favour.
Speaking to reporters, Thangal said the consistent backing for Satheesan across multiple exit polls indicates a broader “people’s sentiment” that cannot be ignored. “If only one or two surveys had suggested this, it could have been dismissed. But when all exit polls speak in one voice, it reflects the mood of the electorate,” he said.
He reiterated that the United Democratic Front (UDF) has always taken decisions based on public sentiment and would continue to do so while deciding on leadership, including the chief minister’s post. At the same time, he clarified that the final decision rests with the Congress high command, which, he said, is capable of understanding and respecting public opinion.
Thangal also expressed confidence that the exit poll projections favouring the UDF would translate into actual results. He pointed to a growing anti-incumbency trend in Kerala since the last Lok Sabha elections, which, according to him, was also evident in local body polls. “We believe this sentiment has culminated in the Assembly elections, and the people have delivered a similar verdict,” he added.
On electoral prospects, the IUML leader claimed that the UDF is poised for a sweeping victory in Malappuram district, predicting wins in all 16 constituencies based on internal assessments. While acknowledging that exit polls have not fully captured the scale of the expected victory, he said the alliance anticipates a performance exceeding a simple majority.
The IUML, which contested 27 seats, is hopeful of winning at least 22, Thangal said. On cabinet formation, he maintained that seat-sharing and ministerial representation would be decided through discussions within the UDF, as has been the convention.
Dismissing speculation, Thangal clarified that there has been no discussion on a Deputy Chief Minister post. “Our focus is on forming a good government and ensuring effective governance. The League will receive what it rightfully deserves,” he said, underlining the party’s continued support for the Congress-led alliance.
