Rain in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 27 April (H.S.):

Kerala continues to reel under intense heat conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for high temperatures across 12 districts, excluding Idukki and Wayanad.

According to the latest forecast, maximum temperatures are likely to touch around 40°C in Palakkad and 39°C in Kollam. Several central districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur and Kozhikode, may record highs of up to 38°C. In Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod, temperatures could reach 37°C, while Thiruvananthapuram is expected to see highs of around 36°C.

The IMD has warned that the combination of high temperatures and humid conditions is likely to result in widespread discomfort, particularly in lowland areas, with only hilly regions expected to experience relatively moderate weather. Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Amid the prevailing heatwave-like conditions, parts of the state have begun receiving summer showers, bringing some respite. The weather department has indicated that rainfall activity is expected to intensify in the coming days, with more regions likely to experience showers.

In view of the strengthening summer rains, a yellow alert has been issued for four districts — Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kannur and Kasaragod — on Wednesday. Additionally, Idukki and Kottayam are likely to remain under a yellow alert on Thursday.

The IMD has cautioned that the rainfall may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid open areas during lightning activity, and secure loose objects that could be affected by strong winds.

With fluctuating weather conditions expected over the next few days, officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged people to follow safety advisories.
