Aizawl, 27 April (HS): The counting of votes for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections in Mizoram began on Monday morning and is progressing peacefully. According to early trends, the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is leading in five wards.

State Election Commissioner H. Lal Thalangliana informed that the counting process commenced at 8 am at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Aizawl. Initial rounds indicate that ZPM candidates have taken the lead in five wards, while trends from the remaining wards are expected to emerge soon.

The AMC elections, held on April 21, recorded a voter turnout of 62.77%, with around 2.39 lakh eligible voters participating. A total of 68 candidates contested the civic polls, including 28 women. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress fielded 19 candidates each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated 11 candidates.

The results will determine which party takes control of the municipal body. In the previous 2021 AMC elections, the Mizo National Front (MNF) had secured control of the corporation. Election officials stated that the counting process is being conducted under strict security arrangements to ensure transparency and order. -----------
