Amravati, 27 Apr (HS): Despite several schemes
announced by the state government t to eliminate malnourishment, tribal-dominated
Melghat area of Amravati district recorded 90 deaths of children due to malnutrition
during April 2025 and March 2026. During the same period five mothers also lost
their lives.
People in the hilly Chikhaldara and Dharni tehsils face
serious issues relating to health facilities. During monsoon season many
villages and hamlets are isolated making health machinery to reach them and the
villagers also are also lack access to the hospitals. The high rate of infant
and child mortality has been reported from the region for many years. Although
the government machinery claims that the infant, child and maternal mortality
has reduced, the reported cases every year become the issue of concern. Even
the Bombay High Court has criticised the government machinery for falling short
of providing services in the region. To some extent the lifestyle of the
tribals and superstition prevailing among them are responsible for the higher
death rate. The health machinery is expected to generate awareness besides
providing services to them
The State Government has approved the proposal of
convention of 100-bed Sub-District Hospital to 300-bed General Hospital and
50-bed Sub-District Hospitals at Churni and Chikhaldara, the issue is pending
for finalisation of suitable land for the health facilities.
