
Guwahati, 26 April (HS): Continuing its sustained drive against the transportation of contraband through railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved significant success in curbing ganja smuggling within its jurisdiction.
NFR official sources confirm on Sunday that during intensive checks and operations carried out between April 20 and 22, RPF teams recovered around 60 kg of ganja from various railway stations under the NFR zone. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth over ₹29 lakh. Additionally, three individuals involved in the illegal transportation were apprehended and handed over to the respective Government Railway Police (GRP) outposts for further legal action.
NFR officials stated that on April 22, the RPF team of Agartala, in a joint operation with GRP, apprehended one person at Agartala Railway Station and recovered approximately 6 kg of ganja worth around ₹3 lakh. The accused was handed over to the GRP Agartala outpost along with the seized contraband.
In another major operation on April 21, the RPF team at Agartala, in coordination with GRP, detained two individuals at the railway station and seized around 21.48 kg of ganja, valued at approximately ₹10.74 lakh. The accused were subsequently handed over to the GRP for further proceedings.
Earlier, on April 20, RPF personnel at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station recovered a substantial quantity of unclaimed ganja in two separate incidents during routine checks. In the first case, around 18 kg of ganja worth ₹9 lakh was seized, while in the second, approximately 13.80 kg valued at ₹6.90 lakh was recovered. The seized items were handed over to the GRP outpost at New Jalpaiguri for necessary action.
The RPF of NFR has been consistently conducting special drives, surveillance and intelligence-based operations to prevent the misuse of railway premises and trains for smuggling narcotics. These continued efforts reflect the commitment of NFR to ensure a safe and secure environment for passengers by curbing illegal activities within its jurisdiction.-----------
