West Bengal, 25 April (H.S.): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday addressed an election rally in Hooghly district, launching a sharp attack on the Centre, the state government and Left parties ahead of the assembly polls.
The rally was held at Mullaber in Serampore in support of Congress candidates across all 18 Assembly constituencies in the district. A large number of supporters attended the programme.
In his address, Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Left parties simultaneously. He said that only Congress could guarantee employment and alleged that the BJP works in the interest of big corporates while ignoring the poor. He also accused the Prime Minister of evading questions in Parliament and handing over national assets to private players.
Attacking the state government, Gandhi alleged that “syndicate raj” and mafia elements were dominant under the TMC regime. He claimed that while the Left had earlier pushed Bengal backward, the present government was continuing on the same path.
On unemployment, Gandhi said lakhs of youths in the state had applied for allowances, alleging that jobs had been taken away under the state government, while the Centre had failed to generate employment nationwide.
He also accused the BJP of practising divisive politics based on religion, asserting that Congress believes in uniting people. Urging voters to support Congress candidates, Gandhi said that new employment opportunities would be created if his party came to power.
Several Congress candidates from Hooghly district were present at the rally.
