Murshidabad, 23 April (H.S.): Amid the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, tension flared in Naoda, Murshidabad on Thursday morning when Humayun Kabir, chief of the Aamjanata Unnayan Party and a candidate, faced strong public protests.
As per information, Humayun Kabir had visited Booth No. 173 in Shibnagar village under Naoda police station area to monitor polling. At that time, local residents surrounded him and began shouting slogans like “Go Back” and “Chor Chor.” Some protesters were also heard raising slogans calling him a “BJP agent.”
The situation escalated when Humayun Kabir lost his temper and charged toward the protesters, leading to scuffles and a chaotic confrontation between both sides. The atmosphere quickly turned volatile.
On information, a large contingent of police and central forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control with strict measures. However, following the incident, Humayun Kabir staged a sit-in protest on the road, alleging that the unrest was deliberately orchestrated by the All India Trinamool Congress to create disturbance. He asserted that he would take the matter to its conclusion.
Meanwhile, from Domkal, allegations have emerged that Left supporters were prevented from casting their votes, with fingers pointed at the Trinamool Congress.
The Election Commission has sought a detailed report on these incidents. Notably, several parts of Murshidabad have remained tense since the night before polling, with reports of clashes between Trinamool and Left supporters, as well as incidents of bombing targeting a Trinamool candidate.
Opposition parties have accused the police of inaction, though the district police administration has denied these allegations.
