Guwahati, 21 April (HS): In a tragic aftermath of severe waterlogging caused by a day of torrential rainfall, four bodies have been recovered from different parts of Guwahati, including three on Tuesday alone, raising serious concerns among residents.

According to reports, the first body recovered on Tuesday morning was identified as Akhtar Ali, a resident of Natboma in Hatigaon. His body was found in the Basistha river at Saukuchi. Shortly thereafter, a second body was recovered from the Mora Bharalu river in the Jyotikuchi area, which was identified as Asim Kalita of Datalpara. A third body was later discovered near the residence of Madhurya Rabha in Lachitgarh, Pamohi, though the identity of the deceased had not been confirmed till the last reports.

Earlier, on April 20, the body of a woman identified as Payal Nath was recovered from a waterlogged drain in the Maligaon area. She had reportedly drowned during the heavy rainfall on April 19.

All the bodies are suspected to have been carried by floodwaters and later recovered from different locations. Police officials indicated that the intense rainfall on April 19 had led to massive waterlogging across the city, submerging footpaths and exposing open manholes. It is suspected that the victims may have fallen into these uncovered drains, although no official confirmation has been made so far.

Upon receiving information, police and forensic teams rushed to the respective locations and carried out necessary procedures. The bodies have been sent to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examinations. Investigations are currently underway.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, with critics alleging that the deaths highlight serious lapses in urban flood management and preparedness. Political parties and various organizations have reacted strongly, demanding accountability and strict action against those responsible.-----------
