Thiruvananthapuram, 02 April (H.S.):
A shocking incident came to light in the state capital on Thursday morning after the body of a premature infant was discovered abandoned inside a bag on the premises of Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram.
According to hospital authorities, the bag was found in the parking area near the multi-speciality block of the medical college. The discovery was made by security personnel during routine surveillance in the early hours of the day. On noticing an unattended bag in a relatively restricted zone, the guards grew suspicious and decided to inspect it.
Upon opening the bag, they were shocked to find the lifeless body of a newborn, believed to have been born prematurely. The incident was immediately reported to the hospital authorities and the police, who arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation.
Preliminary assessments by the police suggest that the infant may have been born to someone who had come to the hospital seeking medical treatment. Investigators believe this possibility due to the restricted nature of access to the area, which is typically limited to patients, attendants, and hospital staff.
Police have launched a detailed probe into the incident, with a special focus on examining CCTV footage from various points within the hospital premises. Efforts are underway to identify individuals who entered or exited the area around the time the bag was discovered.
The body of the infant has been shifted for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and establish further details.
The incident has triggered concern among hospital authorities and the public alike, raising serious questions about monitoring, access control, and the circumstances that led to the abandonment of the newborn.
