Kochi, 02 April (H.S.):Chennai will witness heightened security measures with nearly 3,000 police personnel deployed across the city ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit beginning Friday.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Chennai at around 3:20 pm by a special aircraft. Shortly after landing, he will travel by helicopter to Puducherry, where he is set to participate in a series of election campaign events and public meetings.
The Puducherry leg of the visit is considered politically crucial, with the BJP aiming to strengthen its foothold in the Union Territory while also reinforcing its electoral prospects in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Party leaders believe Modi’s presence will provide a significant boost to campaign momentum in the final phase of polling.
Following his engagements, the Prime Minister will return to Chennai by around 6 pm and stay overnight at a luxury hotel in Guindy. He is also expected to hold a closed-door meeting with senior BJP leaders to review election strategies and booth-level coordination.
On Saturday, Modi will conclude his Chennai visit and depart for Kerala at approximately 1 pm to continue his campaign tour.
Meanwhile, the city has been placed under an extensive security cover. Acting on instructions from Chennai Police Commissioner Arun, security has been tightened at key locations, including the airport, Guindy, and Meenambakkam.
Authorities have declared Guindy and Meenambakkam as high-security “red zones,” with strict restrictions in place. Drone operations have been banned, and police personnel have been stationed at close intervals along key routes to ensure effective crowd management and rapid response.
Traffic diversions are expected across several parts of the city, and the public has been advised to cooperate with officials to ensure smooth movement during the visit.
