Guwahati, 14 April (HS): A festive atmosphere has gripped Assam as the state celebrates Rongali Bihu with great enthusiasm, marking the beginning of the Assamese New Year. The first day of the festival, observed as Goru Bihu, was celebrated across the state with traditional fervour.
On this occasion, farmers bathe their cattle in rivers, ponds and water bodies and follow age-old rituals using dighloti and makhiyoti leaves, praying for the health and prosperity of their livestock. Villages across Assam witnessed vibrant scenes as people took part in the rituals with devotion and joy.
Bohag Bihu, one of the most significant festivals of Assamese culture, has brought cheer to both rural and urban areas. The rhythmic beats of dhol, pepa and gagana echoed across the state, with young men and women actively participating in Bihu dance and songs. Markets and households are bustling with preparations, including the exchange of traditional gifts like bihuwan (gamosa).
The festival, which begins with Chaitra Sankranti, holds deep agricultural significance, symbolising the onset of the sowing season and invoking fertility and prosperity. Following the observance of Uruka, Goru Bihu is being celebrated today, while Manuh Bihu will be observed tomorrow, when people seek blessings from elders and exchange greetings.
Despite evolving with time and finding space in modern stages, the essence of Rongali Bihu remains rooted in tradition. People across Assam are immersed in festivities, celebrating the beloved spring festival with unity and joy.-----------
