Thiruvananthapuram, 14 April (H.S.):Marking the birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday issued a strong message against the resurgence of caste discrimination, calling for renewed commitment to social justice and equality.

In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister paid tribute to Ambedkar, describing him as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to building a society free from caste-based oppression. He said Ambedkar’s relentless fight against social inequality and his role in shaping the Constitution continue to guide the nation’s democratic values.

However, Vijayan expressed concern over what he termed as “worrying signs” of increasing casteism, particularly within higher educational institutions. He said the developments raise serious questions about whether Kerala’s long-cherished progressive ideals are being eroded.

Referring to the recent death of Nithin Raj, a first-year BDS student at a private medical college in Ancharakandi, Kannur, the Chief Minister termed the incident “deeply painful” and unacceptable. Nithin Raj, a native of Uzhamalakkal in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly died by suicide, with emerging details pointing to disturbing circumstances.

“Whoever pushed such a brilliant student to this tragic end has committed an unforgivable crime,” Vijayan said, asserting that Kerala society stands firmly with the grieving family. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and demands for a thorough investigation into possible harassment and institutional lapses.

The Chief Minister also criticised the Centre for failing to act on the long-pending demand for legislation to address caste discrimination in educational institutions. He referred to the proposed Rohith Vemula Act, named after Rohith Vemula, and said the absence of a robust legal framework continues to leave students vulnerable.

He further noted that guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in place of such a law have been stayed by the Supreme Court, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive legislation.

Calling for unity, Vijayan urged people to stand against all forces that promote division and hatred, including caste-based discrimination. He said Ambedkar’s ideals should inspire collective efforts to uphold equality, dignity, and justice.

The Chief Minister concluded by extending Ambedkar Jayanti greetings, reaffirming the state’s commitment to inclusive and progressive values.
