Hooghly, 13 April (H.S.):

Tension gripped the Santoshpur area of Tarakeswar on Monday following a dispute over a religious campaign carried out by a group of sadhus. The incident soon turned into a political flashpoint, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) trading allegations.

According to local sources and police, a group of sadhus had taken out a religious campaign in the Santoshpur locality. Allegations surfaced that their activities were obstructed, with claims that local TMC leaders were involved in stopping the campaign.

On information, BJP candidate Santu Pan reached the spot and staged a sit-in protest on the road. His protest further escalated tensions in the area.

The police and central forces were deployed at the scene to bring the situation under control. Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been stabilized.

Meanwhile, Santoshpur Gram Panchayat’s TMC Deputy Pradhan, Rama Malik, denied the allegations. She stated that the local population already follows Hindu Sanatan traditions and there was no need for such a campaign in the area. She also accused the BJP of trying to politicize the issue and questioned their absence during other local problems.

On the other hand, BJP candidate Santu Pan alleged that the sadhus were verbally abused and disrespected. He blamed the ruling party for the current situation in the state.

Although the situation is now under control, the incident has sparked continued political reactions from both sides.
