Hooghly, 13 April (H.S.): The release of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) manifesto for the Serampore Assembly constituency on Sunday evening has intensified the political atmosphere in the region. The manifesto outlines several promises aimed at development, including improvements in infrastructure, expansion of civic amenities, job creation, and promoting the Mahesh Jagannath Temple on the national tourism map.
Reacting to the announcement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Bhaskar Bhattacharya raised sharp questions over the intent and timing of the promises. He pointed out that the TMC has been in power in the state for a long time and has representation in Serampore through its MP, MLA, and local bodies, yet is now making fresh commitments.
Bhattacharya alleged that if meaningful development had been carried out over the years, such promises would not be necessary. He accused the ruling party of attempting to mislead the public once again through its manifesto.
The BJP candidate further claimed that several points included in the TMC manifesto resemble those from his own earlier “Sankalp Patra” (pledge document). He asserted that the people of Serampore are aware and capable of assessing the credibility of such claims.
He also criticized the TMC’s governance record, alleging shortcomings in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and basic services. Additionally, he raised concerns over broader administrative and political issues in the state.
With the manifesto now becoming a point of contention, the political contest in Serampore appears to be gaining momentum, as voters prepare to make their decision in the upcoming election.
