Pragya Call for 100% Voter Turnout to Safeguard Assam’s Culture and Security

Guwahati, 31 March (HS): With only a few days remaining for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, a significant public appeal has been issued by socio-cultural organisation Pragya, urging citizens to ensure 100% voter participation in the interest of safeguarding the state’s culture and security.

In a statement shared by RSS Prachar Pramukh Kishor Shivam, Pragya highlighted key concerns regarding the present situation and future challenges facing Assam, drawing attention to issues directly linked to the state’s identity, cultural heritage and security. The appeal has been endorsed by over 200 eminent personalities, including Satradhikars, religious leaders, vice-chancellors, artists, literaries, former army officials, professors and advocates.

The signatories expressed deep concern over rapid demographic changes, particularly the shift observed from Lower Assam to Upper Assam, attributing it to increasing migration. They noted that the growing influence of migrants has compelled many indigenous communities to relocate from their native areas, raising apprehensions about threats to local culture, language and land.

Emphasising the need for decisive action during the crucial election period, the appeal called upon voters to elect candidates and political parties committed to protecting Assam’s demographic balance and safeguarding indigenous rights. It also stressed the importance of including conservation of natural resources and wildlife as a priority in electoral agendas.

The statement further urged support for political entities that adopt strict policies against drugs and substance abuse to protect the younger generation. Citizens were also advised to remain vigilant against misinformation campaigns by anti-national and anti-indigenous forces.

On land rights, the appeal underlined the necessity of a government committed to freeing encroached land and prioritising indigenous ownership. Stressing the importance of peace and stability, it cautioned against a return to periods marked by violence, bombings and unrest, advocating instead for a strong and stable government.

Additionally, the appeal called for clarity from political parties on issues such as self-reliance, promotion of indigenous products, organic farming regulation and the commercialization of education.

Concluding the statement, citizens were strongly urged not to waste their votes by opting for NOTA, warning that such choices could indirectly harm indigenous interests. Pragya reiterated that Assam requires a capable and committed government dedicated to preserving Assamese culture, local languages and the rights of indigenous communities.-----------
