India Supplies Additional Diesel to Bangladesh Amid Energy Concerns
New Delhi, March 28 (H.S.): India has supplied an additional 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh amid energy supply concerns triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict, according to officials.
Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager (Commercial) of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), said Bangladesh has recently received a total of 15,000 tonnes of diesel from India.
He also said another 6,000 tonnes of diesel is scheduled to be supplied on March 28, while India has proposed to supply around 40,000 tonnes in April, which Bangladesh has accepted.
The diesel is being supplied from the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline to the Parbatipur depot in Bangladesh.
Officials said the pipeline had remained non-operational following political developments in Bangladesh in 2024 but was resumed after the formation of a new government earlier this year.
Energy experts said Bangladesh’s annual diesel requirement is around 4 million tonnes, most of which is met through imports. Apart from India, Bangladesh also imports diesel from Singapore and Middle Eastern countries.
The additional supply is expected to help Bangladesh manage fuel demand amid global supply uncertainties linked to the West Asia situation.
