Patiala, March 25 (H.S.): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who had been absconding in a rape case since September last year, was arrested by Punjab Police from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, officials said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Patiala) said the Sanour MLA was apprehended in Gwalior and is being brought to Patiala. He will be produced before a local court after being brought back.

Police said a case was registered against Pathanmajra on September 1, 2025, at the Civil Lines police station under charges of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation based on a complaint by a woman from Zirakpur.

The complainant alleged that the MLA falsely claimed to be divorced, entered into a relationship with her and married her in 2021 despite already being married. She also accused him of sexual exploitation, issuing threats and sending obscene material.

Police had earlier declared Pathanmajra a proclaimed offender after he failed to appear in the case. A look-out notice had also been issued against him.

According to police, he had been absconding since September 2 and had earlier escaped when a police team attempted to arrest him in Karnal, Haryana.

Police had alleged that his supporters fired shots and pelted stones during the earlier attempt to arrest him. However, Pathanmajra had denied the allegations and claimed he fled fearing a “fake encounter”.

Further investigation is underway.
