Guwahati, 23 March (HS): A joyous wedding celebration in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district took a distressing turn after dozens of attendees reportedly fell sick, triggering fears of food poisoning in the area on Monday.

The incident surfaced from Bahoni Adarsha Timung village under the Bokoliaghat region, where a traditional Karbi marriage ceremony—popularly known as “Adam Asar”—was underway. Soon after partaking in the feast, several guests began complaining of health issues, prompting alarm among locals.

Eyewitnesses said symptoms such as vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea appeared rapidly among those who consumed the food, most of which consisted of rice-based preparations. The sudden outbreak affected men, women and children alike.

With the situation worsening, villagers swiftly arranged transportation to shift the affected individuals to the nearby Bokoliaghat 30-bed hospital. Medical personnel there initiated immediate treatment, placing a number of patients under observation.

Hospital sources indicated that while the majority of patients are currently in stable condition, a few remain in critical condition and are being closely monitored.

Meanwhile, officials from the health department and district administration have launched a probe into the incident. Teams are expected to collect and examine food samples to ascertain the exact cause of the suspected contamination.

The episode has caused concern across Bokoliaghat and surrounding areas, drawing attention to food safety measures during large social gatherings. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain hygiene standards and exercise caution while preparing and serving food at community events.------------
