Kolkata, 21 March (H.S.): Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday launched his campaign from Bhabanipur and accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of showing “panic” over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Adhikari, who is contesting against Banerjee from Bhabanipur, is also in the fray from Nandigram, where he is a two-time MLA.

He began his campaign after offering prayers at the Kalighat Kali Temple, near the chief minister’s residence.

“The signal is clear. Panic over SIR and fear of defeat are visible in her body language. People can sense it,” he told reporters.

He said the BJP’s decision to field him from Bhabanipur reflected its seriousness, adding he was following party directives and those of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Adhikari also criticised Banerjee’s remarks at an Eid gathering, saying religious platforms should not be used for political statements.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Banerjee had targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging he was the “principal mastermind” behind the SIR exercise.
