Guwahati, 21 March (HS): The Congress has announced an aggressive electoral strategy for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, indicating that it will contest nearly 100 seats while accommodating its alliance partners as part of a broader opposition front.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that the party has finalized its seat-sharing arrangement. In a bid to consolidate anti-incumbency votes against the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress has left 26 seats for its alliance partners.

Addressing the media, Gogoi said that while the party is preparing to contest around 100 seats, there will be “friendly contests” on two constituencies among alliance partners.

He emphasized that the emergence of opposition unity has significantly altered the political landscape of the state, increasing pressure on the ruling BJP. According to him, the consolidation of opposition forces ahead of the elections has disrupted the BJP’s earlier electoral calculations.

Gogoi further remarked that the BJP appears to be under pressure and was not expecting a united opposition to pose a strong challenge in the 2026 Assembly elections. Highlighting the rationale behind the alliance, he said the move reflects the sentiments of the people of Assam, adding that the Congress decided to form a united opposition to honor the public’s expectations.----------
