
Bhubaneswar, 21 March (H.S.) : Odisha marked the State-Level World Forestry Day 2026 with a grand celebration highlighting the state’s initiatives in forest conservation, green cover expansion, and community participation. On the occasion, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that forests are an invaluable gift of nature, serving as the foundation of environmental balance, human life, and livelihoods.
The event was held at the Lok Seva Bhavan Convention Centre in Bhubaneswar. The Chief Minister stated that the purpose of World Forestry Day is to raise awareness about the importance of forests, their conservation, and the impact of climate change. He noted that effective forest management, extensive tree-planting campaigns, and active community involvement have positioned Odisha as a leading state in forest conservation and green cover expansion.
The Chief Minister informed that in the past two years, the state has witnessed an increase of 558 square kilometers in forest and tree cover. Currently, approximately 37.63% of the state’s total geographical area, equivalent to 58,597 square kilometers, is under forest and tree cover. He also highlighted the success of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, under which 1.49 crore saplings were planted in a single day, and over 8 crore saplings have been planted within a year.
He further emphasized that advancements in science and technology now allow for industrial development with minimal land usage and without harming the environment. By maintaining a balance between environmental protection and industrial growth, both objectives can complement each other.
This year’s World Forestry Day theme, “Forests and Economy,” was highlighted by the Chief Minister, who stated that forests are crucial not only for environmental sustainability but also for economic development. He explained that the state government is implementing programs that leverage forests as a key source of livelihood while simultaneously promoting conservation efforts.
The Chief Minister also urged stricter vigilance to prevent forest fires and reduce human-wildlife conflicts. He directed authorities to take stringent action against those responsible for human-induced forest fires.
Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, Minister for Forests, Environment, and Climate Change, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the government’s continuous efforts to improve the development and livelihoods of forest-dependent communities. He noted that alternative livelihood opportunities are being created for residents of forest-adjacent areas to strengthen their economic resilience.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg outlined the state’s long-term development goals, highlighting plans for economic growth and employment generation leading up to 2036 and 2047. She noted that the tourism sector alone aims to generate 2.5 million jobs, with the Forest Department playing a key role, and stressed the importance of focusing on a green economy alongside economic development.
During the program, the Chief Minister inaugurated a photo exhibition on forest conservation, released related publications, and honored forest officers and staff for their exemplary work. The presence of senior officials and experts added further significance to the event, reinforcing Odisha’s commitment to sustainable forest management and environmental stewardship.
