Guwahati, 19 March (HS): The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Thursday unveiled its list of 26 candidates for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, presenting a blend of seasoned leaders and grassroots workers across key constituencies.
Prominent names in the list include party president Atul Bora, who will contest from Bokakhat and senior leader Keshab Mahanta from Kaliabor. The party has also fielded Dipti Mayee Choudhury from Bongaigaon, reflecting its continued emphasis on women’s representation.
The candidate list spans a wide geographical range, covering Upper Assam constituencies such as Tezpur, Sivasagar and Naoboicha, along with Lower and Central Assam seats including Barpeta, Goalpara East and Chenga. In the Barak Valley region, AGP has nominated candidates in Sonai, Karimganj South, Algapur-Katlicherra and Binnakandi, aiming to strengthen its organisational presence in the area.
The selection indicates the party’s strategy of balancing experienced faces with relatively lesser-known but active local leaders. The inclusion of professionals such as Dr Tapan Das from Dimoria and Dr Tara Prasad Das from Paka-Betbari signals an effort to bring diverse expertise into the political fold.
Political observers note that the list aligns with AGP’s long-standing focus on regional identity and grassroots connect, especially as it prepares to contest the elections in alliance with partners under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The announcement is expected to energise party workers and set the stage for an intense electoral contest across the state. With the elections approaching, attention will now shift to how AGP candidates perform in their respective constituencies amid Assam’s evolving political landscape.
Notably, AGP is contesting 26 seats as part of the seat-sharing arrangement within the NDA for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.-----------
