In a tragic road accident in the early hours of Wednesday, three MBBS students lost their lives after the electric scooter they were travelling on crashed into an electric pole and plunged into a nearby drain at Kuruvangad near Koyilandy.
The deceased have been identified as Nanda Kishore, Abhiyan, and Abhinav, all students of Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode. The incident occurred around 1.40 a.m., according to the police.
Preliminary investigations by the Koyilandy Police suggest that the scooter, which was carrying all three students, lost control before veering off the road and hitting an electric pole. The impact of the collision reportedly caused the vehicle and its riders to fall into an adjacent drain, leading to critical injuries.
Lorry drivers passing through the area noticed the accident and immediately rushed to the spot. The injured students were quickly taken to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, despite efforts to save them, all three succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, police officials said.
The sudden demise of the young medical students has sent shockwaves through the academic community and their hometowns. Friends, classmates, and faculty members of Malabar Medical College have expressed deep grief over the incident, remembering the victims as bright and promising individuals.
The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Post-mortem examinations and other legal formalities are underway. Authorities stated that the bodies will be handed over to the families after completion of the procedures.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case and are conducting a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, including factors such as speed, road conditions, and visibility at the time of the mishap.
