Guwahati, 18 March (HS): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi has expressed support for young leader Prateek Bordoloi following the political switch of his father, Pradyut Bordoloi, who resigned from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday.
Reacting to the development, Gogoi termed Pradyut Bordoloi’s decision to leave the Indian National Congress as “very unfortunate.” He noted that the Congress had stood firmly by Bordoloi during the Lok Sabha elections and had even granted an Assembly ticket to a member of his family for the upcoming polls. Despite this, Bordoloi chose to leave the party citing personal reasons.
Gogoi said he would personally reach out to Prateek Bordoloi, who is preparing to contest from the Margherita constituency on a Congress ticket. “I never imagined he would face such a situation. I will speak to him and let him decide his future course of action,” Gogoi stated.
Emphasizing the significance of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, Gogoi described the contest as a broader fight against the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He claimed that various sections of society, including women, tea garden communities, and youth, do not want Sarma to return as Chief Minister.
At the same time, Gogoi acknowledged that Bordoloi’s decision to support Sarma was a personal choice. On the issue of electoral alliances, he revealed that he had recently spoken to Akhil Gogoi regarding a possible tie-up with the Raijor Dal, adding that the next move now rests with Akhil Gogoi.
Referring to his recent discussions with Pradyut Bordoloi, Gogoi said the election is not about individuals but about “freeing the state” from what he described as fear, corruption, and divisive politics. He also alleged irregularities in land distribution, claiming that while many poor people were denied land rights and faced rising revenue burdens, certain families had allegedly accumulated vast tracts of land. He asserted that the Congress remains strong in several regions, particularly in Lakhimpur.---------
