Kolkata, 18 March (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday alleged that its workers were attacked during a meeting in South 24 Parganas district, leaving three persons injured, even as Trinamool Congress denied the charge and levelled a counter-allegation.

The incident was reported from Sangraminagar under Banshra gram panchayat in Canning West Assembly constituency, where BJP workers had allegedly gathered for an election-related meeting.

According to local sources, a BJP functionary from the Centre had visited the area for campaigning and a meeting was being held with local workers. Arrangements for lunch had also been made at the residence of one Bacchu Manna.

The BJP alleged that a local TMC panchayat member took photographs of the gathering, which was objected to by those present. This allegedly led to an altercation, following which the panchayat member returned with supporters and attacked the house.

BJP leaders claimed that Bacchu Manna, his son Shubhamoy Manna and his wife were assaulted in the incident. A woman was among the three persons who sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Canning Sub-divisional Hospital. The party alleged that the attack was carried out because of their political affiliation.

However, Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations, claiming that its panchayat member Swapna Haldar was writing on walls in the area when BJP workers allegedly misbehaved with her. When she protested, she was assaulted, which led to the clash, the party said, terming the BJP’s allegations as baseless.
