15 March (HS): Over 710 cartons of Indian-made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth
approximately Rs 1.20 crore were confiscated in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli, and
two smugglers were detained, police said on Sunday. Circle Officer (Sadar)
Devendra Kumar stated that the liquor was being smuggled from Noida to Bihar
via Chandauli. The police crew halted a truck near a gas pump in Barthi
Kamarour on National Highway-19 after receiving a tip. During the check, bags
of putty were discovered placed on the truck, and a search uncovered 710
cartons of IMFL hidden underneath them, he claimed, adding that the booze is
worth around Rs 1.20 crore.
The truck
driver, Ali Bakhsh (27), a native of Dumka in Jharkhand, was apprehended by
police. Another culprit, Murtaz Ansari (40), a native of Deoghar district, was
apprehended, along with a Mahindra Bolero that was reportedly used to transmit
location updates to the truck, the officer stated. A complaint has been filed
against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
and the Excise Act, and additional legal actions are pending, according to the
police. In 2016, the Bihar government imposed a comprehensive ban on liquor
manufacturing, trading, storage, transit, sale, and consumption inside the
state.
