New Delhi, 14 March (H.S.): Private sector integrated steelmaker JSW Steel is set to develop a coal mine, Minas de Revuboè, in the African nation of Mozambique. The company disclosed this in a statement.According to the company statement, the project will unfold in distinct phases. Located in Mozambique's Tete province within the Moatize coal basin, the mine holds 850 million tonnes of coal reserves, of which 250 million tonnes constitute recoverable coking coal.
JSW Steel stated it will develop the mine across multiple phases, targeting completion of the first phase within the next 2.5 years. Thereafter, the mine could yield approximately 2.4 million tonnes of premium coking coal annually.
This initiative forms part of the company's strategy to secure its own raw material supplies for steel production. It promises long-term stability for one of steelmaking's most critical and costly inputs.
Notably, India possesses scant reserves of high-quality coking coal. Consequently, Indian steel firms must increasingly source coal through overseas mines to meet demand.
