Chennai, 14 March (H.S.) : With the Election Commission of India (ECI) expected to announce the schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections at any moment, the Tamil Nadu government has entered a period of intense activity to clear pending files and finalize administrative decisions.
State departments are reportedly working at a rapid pace to ensure that essential government orders and project approvals are processed before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into immediate effect. Once the schedule is declared, the state administration will be prohibited from announcing new schemes, making major policy decisions, or launching projects that could influence voters.
Sources within the Secretariat indicate that various departments, including School Education, Higher Education, and Rural Development, have been instructed to expedite the issuance of pending Government Orders (GOs). High-level officials are focusing on clearing recruitment-related files, promotion lists, and the sanctioning of funds for ongoing infrastructure projects. The rush is seen as a strategic move to ensure that administrative momentum is maintained and that public welfare initiatives are not stalled during the electoral period.
Senior authorities have stated that the administration is prioritizing the completion of all formal documentation to avoid any legal or procedural hurdles once the election notification is issued. Chief Secretary-level reviews have reportedly taken place to monitor the status of critical files across different ministries. This administrative push comes amid heightened political anticipation as the ECI concludes its final review of poll preparedness in the state.
While the official machinery remains focused on clearing the backlog, the implementation of the MCC will eventually shift the focus toward election management and the maintenance of law and order across Tamil Nadu's thirty-eight districts.
