Chennai, 08 February (H.S.) : The Melapalayam police arrested a 35-year-old man on Saturday following the tragic death of a newborn during a self-attempted natural delivery at his residence.

The accused, identified as Naseem Hussain, allegedly attempted to assist his pregnant wife in giving birth at their home on Therku Thaika Street without any professional medical assistance, leading to the death of the infant boy shortly after birth.

The incident came to light after the couple visited a government primary health center for post-delivery treatment, where doctors grew suspicious and alerted the authorities. Investigations revealed that the delivery took place on Friday night around 11:00 PM.

Following the infant's death, Hussain had reportedly buried the body at a local burial site at Kattu Jumma Masjid before seeking medical help for his wife. Revenue officials and police exhumed the body on Saturday evening in the presence of witnesses, and the remains were sent to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for a formal autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Melapalayam police have registered a case against Naseem Hussain under Sections 91 and 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanjita (BNS), which pertain to acts intended to prevent a child from being born alive and the concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body. A senior police official stated that while the couple claimed the home birth was a mutual decision, such practices pose a severe risk to both the mother and the child.

Hussain has been remanded to judicial custody, and further inquiries are underway to ascertain if any external influences or digital tutorials guided their actions.
