Guwahati, 08 February (HS): In a major push to strengthen connectivity and passenger-centric infrastructure in the Northeast, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off a new train service between Sairang and Silchar on February 9 through video conferencing. On the same occasion, the minister will also inaugurate new passenger amenities at Guwahati Railway Station.
According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the main programme will be held at Sairang Railway Station, where Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma will be present. The event marks another historic milestone in expanding rail connectivity to the capital region of Mizoram. Assam Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha will join the programme virtually, while senior railway officials and other dignitaries will be present at Sairang and Guwahati stations.
The new Sairang–Silchar train service will provide direct, affordable and comfortable rail connectivity to Mizoram’s capital region. It is expected to significantly improve access to the state’s natural tourist destinations, thereby boosting tourism, hospitality, local trade and allied services. With Silchar being a major hub for higher education and advanced medical facilities, the service will also greatly benefit students and patients from Mizoram.
At Guwahati Railway Station, several new passenger facilities have been developed at a prominent location. These include an air-conditioned lounge, improved lighting and ventilation, charging points, secure sleeping pods, and a dedicated women’s restroom. A limited multi-cuisine catering service for paid users has also been introduced. The integrated facility reflects Indian Railways’ vision of world-class station infrastructure and an enhanced passenger experience.
The launch of the new train service and passenger-focused initiatives underlines NFR’s commitment to modern infrastructure and improved services, with the potential to set new benchmarks for rail facilities across the Northeast.------------
