Guwahati, 08 February (HS): Amid the fresh political storm triggered by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statements alleging a Pakistan link involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has dismissed the claims as politically motivated and challenged the BJP-led government to act instead of making statements.
Reacting sharply to the chief minister’s remarks, AIUDF general secretary and MLA Rafiqul Islam said on Sunday that if there is any concrete evidence of links with Pakistan, the authorities should proceed strictly in accordance with the law. He asserted that making serious allegations without follow-up action only raises doubts about the government’s intent.
Questioning the timing and motive behind the claims, Islam asked why no action had been taken so far if such links actually existed. “If Gaurav Gogoi and Elizabeth Gogoi have any connection with Pakistan, action should be taken against them. Why has the government waited for two years?” he said, adding that such grave accusations cannot be reduced to mere political rhetoric.
The AIUDF leader further remarked that the chief minister frequently shares public platforms with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which, according to him, reflects a lack of institutional seriousness on the issue. “The Home Minister and the Prime Minister listen to these speeches. This appears to be nothing more than political posturing,” Islam said.-----------
