Chennai, 03 February (H.S.) : In a significant move to document the avian biodiversity of the region, the Forest Department, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Raptor Research Foundation (TNRRF), identified approximately 15 species of raptors in the Tiruchy Forest Range.

This extensive enumeration exercise was part of the Phase I raptor census conducted on Monday, aimed at understanding the distribution and population dynamics of these critical birds of prey. These raptors, which occupy the top tier of the food chain, serve as vital indicators of environmental health due to their sensitive migratory patterns and response to ecological shifts.

The state government established the TNRRF under the supervision of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) to ensure the long-term protection of these species across Tamil Nadu. Forest Ranger J RAVI, who played a key role in organizing the program, stated that 14 specific locations within the Tiruchy Forest Division were selected for the census.

The field data gathered by volunteers from various conservation groups and students suggests that the local environment remains highly suitable for these native raptor species. All collected samples and observational data have been forwarded to the AIWC for further scientific assessment and detailed reporting.

Conservationists have emphasized that protecting these birds is essential for maintaining a balanced ecosystem, as they play a crucial role in controlling rodent and small animal populations. The census involved rigorous monitoring by forest officials and dedicated wildlife enthusiasts who tracked sightings and nesting behaviors across the identified pockets.

Authorities believe that the findings from this initial phase will provide a robust foundation for future conservation strategies and habitat management. This initiative marks a professional milestone in the state’s efforts to integrate scientific research with wildlife preservation at the grassroots level.
