Lucknow, 28 Feb (HS): A former King George's
Medical University resident and three others have been charged with the alleged
sexual exploitation and religious conversion of a female doctor, an officer
said on Saturday. On Friday, the police filed a 250-page chargesheet against
the main accused, Dr Ramizuddin Naik alias Ramiz Malik, his father Salimuddin,
mother Khadija, and nikah witness Shariq Khan, according to Deputy Commissioner
of Police (West) Vishwajeet Shrivastava. The accused doctor has been charged
with rape, criminal intimidation, and forced religious conversion under
relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Sections 3 and 5
of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021,
according to the officer.
His parents and co-accused have been charged with
assisting, abetting, and harbouring, he said. According to police, the name of
a Pilibhit-based priest, Syed Zahid Hasan, who reportedly solemnised a
marriage, is not yet on the chargesheet. According to the officer, his role is
being investigated, and if evidence is uncovered against him, a supplemental
chargesheet will be issued. The case was filed at Chowk police station in
December last year when a junior doctor at KGMU said that the accused hid his
married status, sexually abused her under the guise of marriage, forced her to
get an abortion, and urged her to convert.
During the inquiry, the complainant informed police
that in February of last year, the accused reportedly converted and married
another lady doctor. Police visited the lady and took her statement before a
magistrate. She allegedly claimed that she had been forced to undergo religious
conversion. Shrivastava stated that the chargesheet included testimony from
multiple witnesses as well as forensic examination of mobile phones and laptop
data acquired during the investigation. The accused doctor was arrested in
Lucknow on January 9, while his parents were first detained and then placed on
judicial detention, according to police, who added that additional
investigation into the matter is ongoing.
