24 Feb (HS): A 45-year-old father and his adolescent daughter reportedly
committed suicide by jumping in front of a goods train on the Kanpur-Lucknow
railway line in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, police said on Tuesday. The
event occurred on Monday night on the down track near the Sahajani crossing in
the Shuklaganj area, before of the Gangaghat railway station, according to the
Inspector in Charge of Gangaghat Police Station. According to early evidence,
Yash Gupta (45) and his 14-year-old daughter ran onto the track as a cargo
train approached, killing them on the spot, he added. When the Railway
Protection Force (RPF) and local police received the information, they raced to
the location. For safety considerations, movement on the down track was
temporarily suspended, causing a minor disruption in rail traffic.
According
to authorities, the incident had a short-term impact on the Lucknow-bound Tejas
Express and Gomti Express. According to police, a white automobile with a
Kanpur plate number was discovered parked some 200 metres away from the scene
near Dewarakala village. Documents and a mobile phone found in the car
indicated that it belonged to Yash Gupta. The family members were notified
based on the car registration information and an inquiry was launched,
according to police.
Gupta's
wife identified the dead. The specific cause for the apparent suicide has still
to be determined, according to the SHO, who also stated that the remains have
been submitted for postmortem investigation. Officials added that further
action will be taken based on family member comments and other information.
